CED Receives $100,000 Grant from Kauffman Center
April 13, 1998, Research Triangle Park, N.C. -- The Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) received a grant for $100,000 from the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Kansas City, Mo. CED will use the grant to launch the CED Entrepreneurial Scholars Program, an inter-institutional internship and symposium for entrepreneurial training for area college and university students.
CED created the program in response to the increasing demands for hands-on experience with entrepreneurial companies from the growing number of students interested in entrepreneurial careers. The Program enables students to gain real experience in a true entrepreneurial environment. That experience is supported with formal teaching in the Symposium to create a complete entrepreneurial training experience. Undergraduate- and graduate-level students from Duke University, Meredith College, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill may apply for the internship.
To ensure a true entrepreneurial experience, internships are only offered with companies that have $25 million or less in annual revenue and/or 200 or fewer employees.
"The opportunity for experience with growing entrepreneurial company is important for the students," said Monica Doss, executive director of CED. "But it's also true that the companies stand to gain a lot from the students." "CED can implement the program very effectively by using its broad base of entrepreneurial companies," Doss continues.
While entrepreneurial companies are aware of the benefits that qualified interns can offer, they often don't have the resources to work with the process of identifying suitable interns and complying with intern placement procedures at five different colleges and universities. Conversely, students often have difficulty locating growing entrepreneurial companies with which to gain experience.
CED is currently in the process of matching prospective interns with companies.
