CED awards Young Entrepreneurial Scholarships 2 Orange High School seniors win $1000 Scholarships
Research Triangle Park - Two Orange High School students are receiving Young Entrepreneurial Scholarships from the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) and BTI, in recognition of their business talents.
BTI and CED co-sponsored the Young Entrepreneur Scholars Program. "This is an excellent program for young people to showcase their business sense and creativity," said Mike Newkirk, BTI President and Chief Operating Officer. "BTI was founded on an entrepreneurial vision to create a leading telecommunications company. This is an opportunity for BTI to encourage the same ambition that started our company."
Matt Howell won the award for "Best Student-Run Business" for Matt & Curtis Howell, which specializes in the repair and maintenance of small commercial equipment. As a student, he already has an impressive knowledge of business, and he plans on putting the $1000 into expanding his business after high school.
Jasmine Cannon won the award for Best Dream Business for Jasmine's Bookstore. Dan Allred, program manager, commented that, "Jasmine put more market research in her imaginary company than most business owners put in their own companies." Jasmine will put the $1000 into her college education.
Pat Rhodes, the principal of Orange High, said, " The program has meant a tremendous amount to these students. It has given them a sense of pride and accomplishment, not only to them, but also to their teachers and their school."
Howell and Cannon will receive their scholarships at the Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards on Thursday, June 10, which is in conjunction with CED's 15th Anniversary Celebration. Debra Morgan, news anchor for WRAL-TV, is the Master of Ceremonies for the event, and more than 300 people have registered to attend the party.
