Governor Easley proclaims May 20th as "Biotech Day" in NC
May 17, 2002, Research Triangle Park, NC - North Carolina Governor Michael F. Easley recently issued an official proclamation proclaiming May 20th "Biotech Day" in North Carolina, indicating the growing importance and impact of biotech companies to the state's economy. Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue will present the proclamation May 20th at Biotech 2002, co-hosted by the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), the North Carolina Biotech Center (NCBC), the North Carolina Biosciences Organization (NCBio), and the national Biosciences Industry Organization (BIO).
"Governor Easley's proclamation clearly recognizes the leadership of North Carolina's biotech industry in developing research solutions to impact everyday lives," said Monica Doss, president of CED. "Statewide, our start-up companies, large research corporations, and universities and community colleges - focusing on R&D, clinical trials, and manufacturing - speak volumes to the strength and diversity of our life science economy as the nation's premier biotech 'one-stop shop.'"
About the Biotech Industry in NC
Currently, North Carolina has about 140 biotechnology companies that generate
more than $2.5 billion in annual revenues. These companies employ about 17,000
North Carolinians and represent an annual payroll of more than $850 million.
The biotechnology industry in North Carolina is growing 10 to 15 percent a year.
By 2025 as many as 125,000 North Carolinians are projected to work in biotechnology,
and annual revenues will likely approach $24 billion.
