CED Highlights Leadership and Management in 2004

Programs to Assist Executives from Triangle Entrepreneurial Companies

October 30, 2003, Research Triangle Park, NC — The Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) has partnered with area universities and organizations to offer high-level training programs for Triangle executives under CED's Leadership and Management Development Initiative (LMDI). Upcoming LMDI programs in early 2004 include collaborative agreements with UNC Kenan-Flagler Executive Education, Bell Leadership and Duke University's Martha Reeves.

CED's LMDI Committee, chaired by Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown's Jack Sheffield, conducted market research and strategic planning including interviews, focus groups, surveys and program evaluations into the leadership needs of Triangle entrepreneurial companies. The committee found that executives of more mature entrepreneurial companies were looking for training in critical management and leadership skills within a peer level environment.

“Vibrant entrepreneurial economies like the Research Triangle require seasoned management talent,” said CED President Monica Doss. “In an effort to fulfill this community need, CED developed the Leadership and Management Development Initiative and recruited world-renowned leadership training programs specially tailored to CED member executives.”

CED has partnered with several forerunners in business leadership and management skills:

UNC Kenan-Flagler Executive Education
UNC Kenan-Flagler's Executive Education Program, with the support of the LMDI committee, has developed a customized “Growth Strategy” series for management team members of CED entrepreneurial companies to address critical strategic planning and management issues. Starting in March 2004, this custom program will be held one Friday each month through June 2004. Each session will include an interactive morning lecture segment along with an afternoon case discussion that will include participants' own business plans and experiences as well a simulation exercise that will utilize the concepts spanning all five sessions.

Topics include “Developing a Growth Strategy within Your Current Business Model,” “Strategic Partnerships and Global Alliances” and “Implementing a Growth Strategy.” The special Executive Education program will cost $5,000, and there is a $250 early-bird discount for those who register before Dec. 1. Event sponsors are Inspire Pharmaceuticals, Mission House Creative and The Solution Center.

Bell Leadership
Beginning in January 2004 Dr. Gerry Bell will lead a 12-month Leader's Roundtable, an exclusive leadership development program designed to assist CEOs, presidents and senior executives in becoming world-class leaders. Despite a high demand for participation from company leaders from across the country, Dr. Bell has reserved one-third of the highly sought-after roundtable spaces for CED members at a special discounted rate.

Rich West, CEO of TriVirix, and Dave Logan, CEO of XActional, are two CED member CEOs who have already signed up to participate in Bell's Leadership Roundtable starting in January. Visit www.bellleadership.com for more information. Previous participants in the Bell Leadership program include Christy Shaffer, CEO of Inspire Pharmaceuticals.

Duke University's Martha Reeves
Duke's Martha Reeves has exceptional consulting experience in human relations and higher education, and she has produced numerous management development programs. Reeves will offer a one-day program in the spring 2004 discussing “selection skills,” which was another need identified during LMDI focus group research. Reeves' session will focus on recognizing talent both internally and externally, matching employees or job candidates to job criteria, and identifying the appropriate skill sets for the future.

These three programs - UNC Kenan-Flagler Executive Education, Bell Leadership and Duke University's Martha Reeves - are the first in a number of future LMDI program undertakings. LMDI stands as a direct result of CED's Innovation to Impact five-year strategic vision and successful capital campaign, which raised more than $4.5 million to date, exceeding its target by more than $1.5 million.
