Veteran Investment Banker Stelios Papadopoulos to Keynote Biotech 2006

Vice Chairman of SG Cowen to Speak at 15th Annual Biotech Conference in Winston-Salem

December 15, 2005, Research Triangle Park, NC – The Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) today announced that Stelios Papadopoulos, vice chairman of SG Cowen & Co., LLC, will deliver featured comments at Biotech 2006. The 15th annual conference presented by CED in partnership with the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and the North Carolina Biosciences Organization (NCBIO) is scheduled for May 22-23, 2006, at the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem, NC.

As an investment banker at SG Cowen, Papadopoulos focuses on the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Prior to joining SG Cowen in February 2000, Papadopoulos spent 13 years as an investment banker at PaineWebber, Inc. where he most recently served as chairman of PaineWebber Development Corp., a PaineWebber subsidiary focusing on biotechnology. He joined PaineWebber in April 1987 from Drexel Burnham Lambert where he was a vice president in the Equity Research Department covering the biotechnology industry. Prior to Drexel, he was a biotechnology analyst at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Before coming to Wall Street, Papadopoulos was on the faculty of the Department of Cell Biology at New York University Medical Center. He continues his affiliation with NYU Medical Center as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Cell Biology. Papadopoulos holds a Ph.D. in biophysics and an M.B.A. in finance, both from New York University.

In addition, Papadapoulos is a co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Exelixis, Inc., and he is a co-founder and member of the Board of Cellzome, Inc. and Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of GenVec, Inc., SGX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and BG Medicine, Inc. In the not-for-profit sector, Papadopoulos is a co-founder and Chairman of Fondation Santé. He is also a member of the board of BioVentures for Global Health and the board of Governors of the New York Academy of Sciences.

“Dr. Papadopoulos has years of experience in the life science sector,” said Targacept’s CEO Donald deBethizy, co-chair of Biotech 2006. “Given his deep knowledge of both the science and business of biotech, Dr. Papadopoulos will offer a unique and valuable perspective when he speaks at this year’s conference.”

In addition to comments from Papadopoulos, Biotech 2006 will also feature concurrent panel sessions and other featured speakers (to-be-announced in the coming weeks). Visit www.cednc.org/biotech for additional details on the conference, including registration and sponsorship information.
