On the Up

SciMetrika, LLC
Research Triangle Park, NC

Analyzing consumer health data is a critical component for pharma companies hoping to develop the next big therapeutic or diagnostic compound. It’s also important to health insurers trying to provide coverage and determine risk, and to government agencies looking to provide better services or undertake relevant research. Enter RTP-based SciMetrika, LLC (www.scimetrika.com), which helps its clients make sense of health data, devise appropriate programs to prevent or treat diseases, and evaluate the effectiveness of these programs. The company’s mission: providing scientific and technical consulting, along with logistical support that advances human health.

“We drive health research by helping our clients review and synthesize the research that has been conducted. We design studies, assist in data collection, and analyze and interpret health related data,” explains SciMetrika President Jean G. Orelien, DrPH, MStat. “We also assist our clients in implementing programs to prevent disease and in evaluating the effectiveness of these programs.”

Currently, clients have contracted with the company to conduct a literature review assessing the scientific evidence of the effectiveness of vitamin D in preventing cancer, to investigate the relationship between environmental exposure and morbidity, and to develop materials for training community health workers in diabetes prevention. SciMetrika’s largest client is the federal government.

Orelien co-founded the company in 2001 after realizing that “there were few companies with a focus on human health and that the market was large enough to support a new company such as ours.” The company’s operations were initially funded by $100,000 of his own money.

Despite the clear niche, it took two years to land the first deal. Until then, Orelien worked at RTI and Analytical Sciences (Constella Group) as a senior statistician and manager of statistical computing. In early 2004, the company finally won a contract large enough to allow him to make SciMetrika his only job.

Today, SciMetrika has 12 fulltime and three part-time employees and is growing at a rate of 100 percent per year. In 2007, the company’s revenues were more than $1 million. Orelien expects 2008’s revenues to be $4 million, and hopes to achieve at least $25 million in five years. But that’s not going to be easy for a company whose largest client is the federal government. “Our main concern is that spending for social and health-related programs has suffered due to problems facing our country right now such as the war in Iraq,” he admits.

Despite that, Orelien remains bullish. “As a small company, we have a lower cost structure compared to our competitors. At the same time, we have staff with the same expertise as these competitors. Despite the present climate of declining budget for our clients, we will continue to gain market share because of the value we offer.

“Our vision is to become a premier provider in services related to public and environmental health for the federal government,” he says. “In the near term, we plan to use our expertise with the federal government to market to the private sector, like the pharmaceutical industry or health insurance companies.” Contact Jean Orelien (919.544.8988).
