(www.memsrus.com), a provider of optical MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) devices to the telecommunications industry, signed a definitive agreement in April 2000 with JDS Uniphase Corporation to be acquired for $750 million payable in stock. MorrisvilleOrologic, Inc. (www.oro-logic.com), a developer of semiconductors, formed an agreement in April 2000 to be acquired by Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. DurhamCogent Neuroscience (www.cogentneuro.com), a developer of a genomics platform for the discovery of treatments for diseases of the brain, closed on $15 million venture financing in April 2000. Investors included Franklin Street Partners, Aurora Ventures, Cordova Technology Partners, Intersouth Partners, Kitty Hawk Capital, SR One, TriState Investment Group and The Wakefield Group. Research Triangle ParkAuctionRover.com (www.auctionrover.com), an Internet company featuring multiple online auctions, signed an agreement to be purchased by California-based GoTo.com for 3.47 million in GoTo shares, valued at about $166 million at the time the deal was announced. Research Triangle ParkBioStratum Inc. (www.biostratum.com), a biotechnology company focused on basal lamina research, closed on a $28 million round of private financing in March 2000. The funding was led by J&W Seligman and included investments from Gemini Investors, Kingdon Capital Management, Needham Capital, North Carolina Enterprise Corp. and Wakefield Group. DurhamBlue292 (www.blue292.com), a developer of a B2B Internet exchange for environmental, health and safety products and services, closed on Series A round of financing on March 14, 2000. Investors included Eno River Capital, The Sprout Group and the North Carolina Technological Development Authority. DurhamNovalon Pharmaceutical Corporation (www.novalon.com), a biotechnology company focused on field of genomics-based drug discovery, formed an agreement to be purchased by Sweden's Karo Bio AB through a non-cash issue. (www.promedex.net), a provider of disease management services to national and regional health plans and employers, signed an agreement to merge with InLight, Inc., a provider of patient-oriented, health information and connectivity solutions. filed a registration statement with the U.S.
Securities and Exchange Commission in March 2000 for
an initial public offering of common stock. The
company plans to raise as much as $230 million in the

DurhamInspire Pharmaceuticals (www.inspirepharm.com), a company focused on the discovery and development of novel therapeutics based on mucosal hydration and epithelial cell biology, filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in February 2000 for an initial public offering of common stock. Research Triangle ParkICAgen, Inc. (www.icagen.com), a drug discovery focused on ion channel modulation, and Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., entered into a collaboration in March 2000 to develop novel products aimed at several central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Under the terms of the agreement, ICAgen will receive precommercialization payments including an up-front payment, research funding and milestones.
